To be honest this could be a clue..

The HT leads are permanently connected to the coils, the fact they came out at all isnt a good sign..

If you look closely there is a small clip that holds both cables onto the body of the coil. simply remove the clip without breaking and then each cable will come free, if you look closely down the cable entry you will see a very sharp point that makes contact to the centre of the cable when inserted.

moving on, the signal generator, took the cover off and had a good look, the coil measures good and their is a slight gap between the generator wheel and the coil block, what is this gap supposed to be?

Can't find a spec for the gap in the manual. As both parts (rotor and stator) are fixed and don't touch there should be no wear. As long as there's a gap it's ok.

Then thats me all out of things to test,

will pick up the coils tomorrow but not confident that its the coils.
